Having Fun with a Cupcake Birthday Cake

Girl-cupcake-birthday
I know there are tons of article, pictures, videos, and even TV shows on cupcakes.  While I agree that they are popular, the effort required to make a decorate a batch of these for a family birthday party is too much effort for me.  So I decided to draw upon the popularity of individual cupcakes and visit my local store to by a jumbo cupcake pan.  This pan is ideal for making a large (about two cake boxes full) cupcake that still provides plenty of room to get creative and have fun.  Since we were celebrating two birthdays, I made two of these large cupcakes.  With some frosting and sprinkles, initially our guests tcouldn't believe they were edible cupcakes.  They were easy and fun to make plus our guests couldn't stop talking about how cool they were.

So if you are looking for an alternative to the traditional cupcake, take a look at a jumbo cupcake pan.  Each cake can easily serve at least 10 people and it provides a much better focal point for a birthday then the smaller individual cupcakes.  As you can see I had no problem loading up each cak with plenty of candles to celebrate our girl's birthdays.

Have fun with this idea.

March of Dimes--March for Babies 2011

March_of_dimes
Every day we ship our diaper cakes to customers all over the country.  When I read the gift card messages our customers submit, the vast majority of them are the traditional congratulatory type greeting.  It's easy to assume that every child born fits the stereotypical "normal" birth.  However, we know that's not the case.

Today the March of Dimes is sponsoring their Walk for Babies activity throughout the country.  My husband and I were able to participate in the Grand Blanc, Michigan walk.  It was sobering to see how many families have been impacted by some form of birth defect as many walkers were wearing T-shirts remembering a baby by name and date of birth.  Seeing those families made the walk that much more inspirational for me.

We received a flyer with some statistics on it:

In Michigan:

  • About 2,409 babies are born on average each week.
  • 301 are born preterm
  • 202 are born with low birth rate
  • 18 of these babies will die before reaching their first birthday.

Expand this to the rest of the country and it's easy to see that many families are impacted by birth defects.  The March of Dimes receives funding through donations and research grants.  The bulk of the funds are used for research/prevention of premature birth and birth defects.  The remaining key areas are congenital heart defects and autism.

Hopefully this post will reach some more folks unaware of the role the March of Dimes plays in preventing birth defects.  You can read more about the walk at www.marchforbabies.org.

My Easter Centerpiece Decoration

Got ambitious today and finally got serious about starting my Easter table decorations. I made the centerpiece with a colorful assortment of spring flowers using a bicycle shaped home accent piece. I added a little pink crinkle paper to the base and finished it off with a small Gund Easter Bunny.

Still have a way to go to finish everything but it's hard to get ambitious when it's freezing cold out here in Michigan!

Hope your week is going well and you are enjoying preparing for Easter.

First Easter Two Tier Diaper Cake

My-first-easter-diaper-cake-large
I put together this Baby's First Easter Two Tier Diaper Cake today.  I just love the Gund My First Easter Plush Basket.  It contains an adorable Lil' Lamb that crinkles when you squeeze it.  It also contains a cute Lil' Chick rattle and lastly, a Lil' Bunny Rabbit with a reflective surface on the front face so that baby can see themself.  I added the Johnsons products and some coordinating bows and ribbons to match the Easter holiday.  The base cake is constructed with 40 Pampers Swaddler 1 diapers and includes free shipping to the lower 48.  You can get more details on our Lil' Baby Cakes website.

I really enjoy designing these special holiday themes.  As always, I welcome your feedback and opinion.

Happy Easter!

Do You Know What You're Taking to the Hospital?

When your on the home stretch of your pregnancy it's easy to get overwhelmed with worry about the new baby.  One "worry" is what to take to the hospital.  On our blog you can read a two part post by Rachel sharing some great tips about what to pack for the hospital.  I think you will find the information invaluable as Rachel works in the maternity ward so she knows first hand the kinds of things to bring (and also, what not to worry about).  You can find it here:  What to Pack for the Hospital--Part 1.   The second part is also available.  I hope you enjoy reading them and sharing the information.

Having a February Born Baby? Here's Some Fun Facts.

We posted some fun facts about February born babies on our blog.  February is the shortest month of the year so you would expect the fewest babies to be born this month.  Even with the short month, there are still plenty of fun facts to know.  Here are a couple of highlights:

  • Amethyst is the birthstone
  • Primrose is the flower, although some argue that it is the violet
  • Zodiac sign is Aquarius until the 18th and then it changes to Pisces

Naturally, February born babies also share the celebration of Valentine's Day, Chinese new year, and black history month.

So if you are expecting your new baby to be born this month, head on over to our Lil Baby Cakes blog to read the rest of the Fun Facts about February Babies article.
